The First List
Firstly, obtain extracts from mailing lists of potential customers that you think might work in bringing you in more trade. So to be clear, we are not thinking here about your own list of customers, if you have one, but a list of potential customers - people who you would hope will buy from you but who have not done so - at least not for the last year.
We're assuming you don't have such a list at the moment - if you do, then fine, no purchasing is needed. But if not you need to buy one.
You should not buy a huge list - it is possible that the first list that you purchase might not work - it might not quite be the right list or indeed it might turn out to be an inaccurate list. Buying all the list at once is therefore not a good idea.
If the retailer of the list tells you that you have to buy the whole list do look around for alternatives. If you get completely stuck, please call 01536 399 000 - we are here to help you, and there is no charge and no obligation at all.
Just how many people you want to mail first time around depends on what you are going to send out - or to be more precise how many replies you expect to get back.
In this first mailing we are looking for a large response - and the responses we bring in don't have to be buyers, they can be interested enquirers too.
So, for example, let us assume that you are giving away something for free or offering something at a very high discount and you hope for a 3% response rate. Then you probably only need to mail out around 300 addresses to know if your mailing list and mailshot are working. That should give you 9 replies - if you get only one or two you know something is wrong, and it is time to go back to the drawing board.
But before we contemplate failure even at this opening moment let us consider how this is going to work. Please click on the arrow below to continue.
